The Nordic or Scandinavian style, as its name implies, is typical of northern European countries such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, including Iceland and Finland.
Due to geographical and climatic conditions, the main objective of this style is to create environments of great warmth, mixing functionality and aesthetics.
Minimalism, simplicity, mix of natural materials, white and complementary colors and light are some of the essential elements that make the Nordic style unique, easy to detect and include in our spaces.
5 elements of the Nordic-Scandinavian style:
1-White
White is the main protagonist of the Nordic style. It brightens the spaces instantly and creates the feeling of spaciousness. This tone can be seen on walls, furniture, textiles, as well as bathroom and kitchen surfaces.
However, a classic combination that we will find in Nordic spaces is white and black, applying the latter in small details, such as a piece of furniture or a decorative object.
We can also play combining white with neutral tones or deep blues, greens, oranges or violets.
2-Natural materials
Warm environments are generated with natural materials and textures, especially in neutral tones. Textiles such as cotton and linen can be used in curtains and fabrics to cover armchairs, beds and curtains. Leather is also an important element: It has been used to upholster furniture such as the iconic Butterfly Chair designed in 1938 by the Austral Group.
Wood, such as Beech or Birch, is also a characteristic element. Different woods were obtained from lush forests in Scandinavian countries to protect from harsh winters. Later, they became the star material of this style, in light and matte tones. We see the material in floors, furniture, and decorative objects and accessories.
3-Geometric and clean design
In furniture and decorative objects, the design is minimalist, almost bare, with straight and simple lines. It should not overdecorate the spaces with visually complicated objects. We put faith in simplicity and functionality.
4-Flowers and plants
Plants and flowers are a perfect complement to any space, especially in the case of interiors as clean as those of the Nordic style. They bring a touch of life and color, and also purify the air and provide balance to our environment.
Monstera deliciosa, Chinese money plants (Pilea peperomioides), Begonia maculata, mother-in-law’s tongue or snake plants (Dracaena trifasciata) and rubber figs are some plants that have been trendy for a few years now and bring modernity to these environments.
5-Furniture
Adding a touch of vintage style fits perfectly in these Nordic interiors. Some famous designers from the middle of the last century have created pieces that are appreciated today for inclusion in modern Nordic environments. Arne Jacobsen, Alvar Aalto, Charles and Ray Eames, Hans Wegner, Alexander Girard and George Nelson are considered references in furniture design.
